Direct laser written waveguide-Bragg gratings in bulk fused silica.
Optical waveguides that incorporate Bragg gratings have been written in bulk fused silica by using the femtosecond laser direct-write method and without the need for lithography or ion-beam techniques. A single manufacturing process is used to create waveguide-Bragg grating reflectors for operation in the C band.
متن کاملStructural Modification of Amorphous Fused Silica under Femtosecond Laser Irradiation
Non-linear absorption of femtosecond laser pulses enables the induction of structural changes in the interior of bulk transparent materials without affecting their surface. This property can be exploited for the transmission welding of transparent dielectrics, three dimensional optical data storages and waveguides. In the present study, femtosecond laser pulses were tightly focused within the i...
متن کاملDirect Observation of Femtosecond Laser Induced Modifications in the Bulk of Fused Silica by Phase Contrast Microscopy
Employing optical phase-contrast microscopy we study the morphology of ultrashort pulsed laser-induced modifications in bulk fused silica and in other optical transparent materials for different conditions of irradiation. The influence of the input pulse energy, focusing depth, and number of pulses per site is investigated in order to establish optimal irradiation conditions for direct writing ...
متن کاملAnomalous laser-induced group velocity dispersion in fused silica.
We present 20fs(2) accuracy laser-induced group velocity dispersion (LI-GVD) measurements, resulting from propagation of a femtosecond laser pulse in 1mm of fused silica, as a function of peak intensity. For a 5.5 × 10(11) W/cm(2) peak intensity, LI-GVD values are found to vary from -3 to + 15 times the material GVD. Normal induced dispersion can be explained by the Kerr effect, but anomalous L...
متن کاملLaser-induced decompression shock development in fused silica
Laser-induced weak shock formation in fused silica is studied using standard wave mechanics and applied to thin-film laser spallation experiments. Due to the negative nonlinear elasticity of fused silica, a laser-induced Gaussian stress pulse evolves into a shock after traveling a certain distance in a fused silica substrate. Experimental observations confirm theoretical predictions of shock de...
